Managing Editor, Aspire
Dear Jourdan,
My proposal for this issue of Aspire magazine is actually a call for a new department. I have observed a need for young professionals to be aware of the best locations to find jobs in their particular field. Often as these new professionals are searching for a job, they are unsure where would be the ideal location to work. I would like to begin a department that focuses on one profession each issue and gives three of the best cities around the United States for finding positions in that field. The department will look like a feature article, perhaps filling a two page spread, but also be a recurring section in each issue.
The first industry I would like to research and inform readers about is the publishing industry, particularly the various editorial positions. I will gather information on which cities in the United States (larger metropolis areas and also smaller cities) provide the best opportunities for careers in the editing field. In those cities, I will look at the number of job openings, different resources (online and print) for finding jobs, the average salaries for editorial positions, and the various types of editorial positions available (technical editing, media editing, fiction editing, and so on). I will collect the data and give a comparison of three cities that show good potential for careers in editorial fields.
As space allows, I will also include information about the entertainment options available in the area, the weather, transportation (public vs. private), crime rates, places to live (in the city vs. the suburbs), and so forth. I hope that this section will be a valuable resource to our readers and help them find ways to research jobs in a particular field and location.
Thank you,
Rachel Morris
